About
A love letter to comedy history.
The Laughter Files is a hand-curated online encyclopedia celebrating the comedians, comedy writers and comic performers who have made generations laugh across the British Isles.
From the stars of the music hall era to today's arena-filling stand-ups, every entry explores the lives and careers of the people who shaped British comedy.
Each profile is presented like a documentary chapter, bringing together biography, comedy style, defining moments, television and film credits, awards, memorable performances, fascinating facts and carefully selected merchandise—all in one place. New Laughter Files are added regularly as the collection continues to grow.
Our Selection Process
Being featured in The Laughter Files is based on merit and lasting contribution to comedy rather than simple popularity.
When considering whether someone should be included, we look at factors such as:
- Their lasting influence on comedy and popular culture.
- Success across multiple areas of entertainment, including stand-up, television, radio, film, writing and theatre.
- The strength and longevity of the audience they built throughout their career.
- The significance of the work they created and the legacy they leave behind.
These are guiding principles rather than rigid rules. Every career is unique, and some performers may excel in different areas than others. Our aim is simply to create the most complete and representative archive of British comedy possible.
Our Editorial Policy
As a matter of principle, The Laughter Files does not feature individuals convicted of serious crimes against another person. We believe that such actions fundamentally outweigh any positive legacy created through their work.
However, we do not exclude performers solely because they have attracted controversy, criticism or have been "cancelled". Comedy has always challenged audiences, pushed boundaries and divided opinion. Humour is inherently subjective, and we are not here to act as moral arbiters of artistic work. Our focus remains on documenting significant contributions to the history of comedy.
An Independent Archive
The Laughter Files is an independent project created by comedy fans, for comedy fans.
If there's a comedian, comedy writer, sitcom or television personality you'd like to see featured in the archive, we'd love to hear from you. Our goal is to build the definitive online home for the history of British comedy—one Laughter File at a time.
